What is Rational Therapy?
Rational Therapy is an overall approach that combines Rational Emotive Therapy, Rational Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Therapy, Positive Psychology, and Humor Therapy. These therapies are effective in the treatment of many different mental health and substance abuse problems.
Rational Emotive Therapy (RET) is a psychotherapy that is based on the premise that a lack of information or illogical thought patterns basically causes the patient's difficulties. RET works on changing a person’s illogical thought processes and basing them on actual information.
Rational Behavior Therapy (RBT) People are encouraged to define what is healthy thinking for them. RBT utilizes visualization and imagery to develop healthy thoughts and emotions. As in RET, RBT teaches people to change illogical thought processes. Both RBT and RET teach people to be their own therapists.
Cognitive Therapy is one of the few forms of psychotherapy that has been scientifically tested and found to be effective in over three hundred clinical trials for many different disorders. In contrast to other forms of psychotherapy, cognitive therapy is usually more focused on the present, more time-limited, and more problem-solving oriented. Indeed, much of what a person does is solve current problems. In addition, people learn specific skills that they can use for the rest of their lives. These skills involve identifying distorted thinking, modifying beliefs, relating to others in different ways, and changing behaviors.
